Most of the time when a machine is experiencing problems after an update, it is because the firmware install did not fully complete. Overwriting the incomplete firmware with the full firmware typically resolves the issue and the machine functions normally again. I have been working with our development team and we think we found the cause of the problem. We just made a change to our server that may improve the results. If you are able, try doing the update from Craft Room again.
If it still does not work, let’s try a different way to install firmware on your Cricut to get it back to normal. Instead of installing firmware from Craft Room, you could try installing firmware through Cricut Design Studio. Design Studio is an older software of ours that is not Mac compatible. So in order to try this, you would need access to a PC.
You can download a trial version here: http://www.cricut.com/CDS/DesignStudioTrial1.aspx There are detailed instructions on how to do the update within the Design Studio program. Be sure to read those before you start. I’ve included below a summary of how to do the update for a quick reference.
(1) Connect your Cricut (powered off) to your computer with a USB cable.
(2) Open the Design Studio program (after installing the trial version, if necessary) and go to the HELP menu and choose UPDATE CRICUT FIRMWARE from the drop down list.
(3) Hold down the STOP button on your Cricut. While holding down STOP tap the power button. Continue to hold down STOP until your Cricut beeps.
(4) In Design Studio, select the machine you are updating (You can choose Cricut Expression. Cricut Cake uses the same firmware as Expression)
(5) Click BEGIN UPDATING NOW. *
Click the following link for a screen shot video of how to do an update with the program: http://screencast.com/t/KI1kYcaEv1k
*Some machines require 2 passes of the update. Before disconnecting your Cricut from the computer or closing Design Studio, check the area to the left of the "BEGIN UPDATING NOW" button to see if the program recommends a second pass. You will need to power of your machine and put it back into update mode before starting the second pass.
