Onderwerp: Fondant of Marsepein?

Hello,

I am a beginner in the  making of cakes. I have to make a barbie cake for a friend of mine but I am wondering what to use (marsepein or fondant) to cover my cake.

Which one is most preferable? Marsepein or fondant and is it possible to make fondant at home? Does anyone have experience with homemade fondant?

grtz,

Noorya.

PS: I have no problem with reading Dutch so I would appreciate your answers in dutch/english.

Re: Fondant of Marsepein?

hi noorya,

it is what you prefer working with what people use.
for a dress i would let it depend on if you want to make a smooth dress, than i would use marsepein. If you want a lot of pleats i would use fondant as the dress will stand wide out when its dry.

Some people make marshmellow fondant at home, i think you can find recipes when you use the search function on this site.

Re: Fondant of Marsepein?

The taste of Marzipan is very different from Sugarpaste (Fondant) so yes.. let the person for whom the cake is decide..

If the person doesn't mind ,and leaves it up to you, you can take that what you prefer..

I've never made homemade marshmellow fondant.. I wouldn't even try.. I've seen the mess it makes and the time it can take.. I prefer just buying in 5 kgs :)

Re: Fondant of Marsepein?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. I have heard that fondant is the best for making figures and everything else as decoration but that marsepein tastes much better than fondant.

I cannot order it from the webshop since i eat kosher. I having difficulties with finding kosher fondant.

Re: Fondant of Marsepein?

I'm not really someone who has a lot of knowledge regarding eating kosher, however, the things I do know do not seem as a hurdle to me when you make your own sugarpaste.

All you need to know then is if you are allowed to eat Marshmellows :) or if you are able to buy kosher marshmellows, there are no milkproducts in marshmellows however they do use gelatin, might be that that part needs to be kosher, as it is a product made from animals.

If you are allowed to eat them you can make your own marshmellow fondant..

Or even go a step further and make your own marshmellows by using a vegitarian product that replaces the gelatin , and then make the fondant..

Re: Fondant of Marsepein?

Hey!

I don't know if this is kosher (because to be honest, I have no idea what you can and can't eat when eating kosher) but here is the recipe I intend to use this afternoon to make my own fondant:

I fond it here on the forum and I think it doesn't sound too hard to make.
Anyways, I hope you'll find your solution really soon, and good luck with your cake!
